There’s always a moment, right before a launch, where I sit back and think…
how did we get here again?
Because a collection like this doesn’t just appear overnight. It builds slowly, in bits and pieces. Colour tests, scraps of clay, ideas that don’t quite work… and the ones that suddenly do.
LUMEN has been quietly growing in the background for the past few months, and it feels a little different to anything I’ve done before.
A shift in colour
If you’ve followed CULU for a while, you’ll know I’m not exactly shy when it comes to colour 😅
But with LUMEN, I found myself naturally leaning towards something softer.
Still colourful, still joyful… but a bit more gentle.
Think early morning light, washed-out skies, soft greens, warm pinks.
Those quiet moments where everything feels calm and full of possibility.
That’s really where this collection came from.
The process
(as always… a bit chaotic)
Every pair still starts the same way, with a block of clay and a vague idea.
From there:
colours are mixed by hand
shapes are cut and layered
pieces are cured, sanded and finished
and then often remade a few times until they feel just right!
Some designs come together quickly.
Others… take their sweet time 🙃
And the patterned pieces in particular are always a bit unpredictable, which is actually one of my favourite parts, no two ever turn out exactly the same.
The beauty of handmade
It’s something I think about a lot when I’m making.
In a world where everything is so uniform and mass produced, there’s something really special about owning something that’s just a little bit different.
A slightly different pattern.
A tiny variation in colour.
A piece that’s yours and yours alone.
That’s what handmade means to me.
